The Villa Burrus gardens
Description
The Burrus Villa’s park covers 340 acres and features a number of noteworthy trees, which were planted in the 1930s: red oaks of North America, lime trees, maples, a cedar, a majestic ash and beautiful purple beeches. New varieties have been planted recently such as yellow poplars of Virginia, Ginkgo bilobas, Sequoias, Morus Nigras, Albizias… Today, the park is managed by the CCVA and the volunteers’ association “Un Jardin Passionnément”, which has created several thematic gardens: a wild undergrowth, an aromatic and medicinal plants garden, a 70 acres vegetable garden, and educational pond, a rose garden which features 230 rose bushes, and a unique Patchwork garden built according to the rule of the golden number. The latter features 18 plots planted with perennial plants, each of the plots forming a traditional patchwork pattern in reference to the local origins of the Amish community, which was founded in Sainte Marie aux Mines in 1693. The park also houses a beautiful old greenhouse, an ornamental pond, a restored “gloriette”(pavilion) and the former outbuildings of the property. All these elements contribute to the creation of a harmonious and serene atmosphere in this magnificent place. In 2013, the association created Physalis, a large living willow structure built by 250 volunteers during 3 weeks of participatory work.
